Starbucks Filter Coffee costs £2.75 for a Tall and carries 31 calories in a Grande, which makes it both the cheapest drink on the UK menu and the one with the most caffeine in it by a wide margin. A Grande holds 254.6mg. No espresso drink on the menu comes close.

The flavour is rounder and less sharp than espresso because of how it is made. Water passes through the grounds slowly and only once, which pulls out the sweeter, more soluble compounds and leaves behind much of the oil that gives espresso its heavy body. What you get is a clean cup with cocoa and toasted nut on the front and a dry finish. Starbucks brews it in batches through the day, so a cup poured shortly after a fresh brew tastes noticeably better than one poured at the end of a batch.

The caffeine numbers are the reason to pay attention. A Tall is 209.8mg, a Grande 254.6mg and a Venti 324.2mg. The EFSA puts the daily limit for adults at 400mg, so a single Venti Filter Coffee uses more than four fifths of it. Calories stay low at 25, 31 and 39 across those three sizes, because the only thing adding any is the coffee itself.

Batch age is the variable nobody mentions. Starbucks holds a brewed batch for a set window and dumps whatever is left, so the cup you get depends on where in that window you arrive. Coffee that has sat on heat picks up a flat, papery edge as the aromatics cook off, which is why the same drink from the same store can taste different at 8am and 3pm. A request for a fresh brew is normal, and most baristas will say how long the current batch has left.

It is the value order on the menu and the one baristas point people towards when a queue is long, since it pours straight from the batch with no wait. Free refills apply in most UK stores for anyone drinking in. For the same low calorie count with a shot based flavour instead, the Caffè Americano is the alternative, and the Caffè Latte is where most people end up when they want the milk.
