About the Iced Caffè Mocha
The Starbucks Iced Caffè Mocha costs £5.35 for a Tall and carries 342 calories in a Grande, which is 59 calories more than the hot version. Espresso, bittersweet mocha sauce and cold milk go over ice, and whipped cream tops it.
An iced mocha being heavier than a hot one surprises most people, and the reason is how the drink is built rather than anything about the ice. Sauce and cream are poured to fill the cup, and a cold cup is larger than a hot one at the same size name, so both go up. The whipped cream is the bigger part of it: 13.3g of the 17.7g of fat in a Grande is saturated, which is two thirds of the 20g adult daily reference intake in one drink.
The flavour holds up better cold than the hot version does. Chilled mocha sauce reads darker and less sweet, closer to plain dark chocolate, and the cold cuts the cloying edge that a hot mocha can develop as it cools. Cream melts down into the surface over a couple of minutes and thickens the top third. Sugar is 30.7g in a Grande out of 32.9g of carbohydrate.
Sauce settling is the other thing to know. Chocolate sauce is denser than milk and it works its way towards the bottom of a cold glass over five or ten minutes, so a mocha left standing tastes thin at the top and cloying at the last mouthful. A stir halfway down fixes it. Hot mochas do not have this problem because the sauce stays in suspension while the drink is warm.
No whipped cream is the single change worth making and it takes roughly 110 calories and most of the saturated fat off a Grande. Calories run 246 in a Tall, 342 in a Grande and 363 in a Venti, with caffeine at 89.1mg through Tall and Grande. The Caffè Mocha is the lighter hot version, and the Iced White Chocolate Mocha goes considerably further at 401 calories.

How to Make a Iced Caffè Mocha at Home
The sauce has to be stirred into the espresso before anything cold arrives. Chocolate sauce meeting cold milk seizes into lumps that never dissolve.

Method
0 of 4 stepsTips
- Warm sauce plus warm espresso, always. Cold milk on undissolved sauce gives you chocolate grit at the bottom of the glass.
- A pinch of salt in the sauce is what stops it tasting like sweetened cocoa.
- Leave the cream off and you save around 110 calories, which is the biggest single saving available on this drink.
Variations
- White chocolate sauce instead of dark, which is the iced white chocolate mocha at nearly 60 more calories.
- Over cold brew rather than espresso for a smoother, stronger drink.
- A pinch of chilli in the sauce, which works better cold than hot.
Tall glass, cream on top, drunk within a few minutes while the cream is still distinct from the drink.
