Starbucks UK sells hot drinks in four sizes: Short at 8oz, Tall at 12oz, Grande at 16oz and Venti at 20oz. Cold drinks drop the Short and stretch the Venti to 24oz, because the extra space holds ice. That is the whole system, and it explains most of what people find confusing about ordering here.
The part worth knowing is what changes as you size up, because it is not what most people assume. A Tall Caffè Latte at £4.60 sized up to a Grande gains 27 calories and no caffeine at all. The same step on a Caffè Americano gains 4 calories and 44.6mg of caffeine. Same two sizes, opposite results. This guide sets out the millilitres, the calories and the shots behind each size, and where paying more actually buys you more coffee.
- Short 236ml 8oz · 1 shot · not on the board
- Tall 354ml 12oz · 1 shot
- Grande 473ml 16oz · 2 shots · the default

The Four Starbucks Sizes and What They Hold
Short is 8oz, roughly 236ml, and it is the size most people never see because it is not on the menu board. It exists in every UK store and 20 hot drinks are made in it, including the Caffè Latte, the Cappuccino and the Flat White. Ask for it by name and you will get it.
Tall is 12oz, about 354ml, and it is the default in the sense that it is the smallest size on the board. Grande is 16oz or 473ml, and it is the size Starbucks marks as standard on most drinks, which is why it is the one the barista assumes if you name a drink without a size. Venti is 20oz, 591ml, for hot drinks. Cold Venti is 24oz, near 710ml, and the extra 4oz is there because a cold cup is part ice.
Espresso is counted differently. A Solo is one shot, a Doppio two, a Triple three and a Quad four, carrying 44.6mg, 89.1mg, 99mg and 132mg of caffeine. The Trenta size sold in the United States is not available in the UK at all.
The names come from Italian and they are the reason the system reads oddly to a British customer. Venti means twenty, for the twenty ounces in a hot one. Grande means large, which it no longer is now that Venti sits above it. Tall was the largest size when Starbucks opened in 1971 and kept its name when the range grew underneath it. None of that helps you order, but it does explain why the smallest cup on the board is called Tall.
Across the UK menu, 53 drinks are made in Tall, Grande and Venti, and 20 of those also come in Short. Frappuccinos and iced drinks start at Tall. Bottled drinks and the ready to drink range have fixed volumes printed on the label and no size choice at all.
How Many Shots Go in Each Size
This is the rule that decides if sizing up is worth the money. A Short and a Tall milk drink both get one shot. A Grande gets two on most drinks. A Venti hot gets two on a latte and three on an Americano, while a Venti cold gets three.
The consequence shows up clearly in the caffeine. A Tall Caffè Latte and a Grande Caffè Latte both carry 89.1mg, because both get two ristretto shots; the Grande just holds more milk. The Cappuccino behaves the same way at 89.1mg for both. The Caffè Americano does not, because it is shots and water rather than shots and milk, so its caffeine climbs the whole way: 44.6mg Short, 89.1mg Tall, 133.7mg Grande, 178.2mg Venti.
So the honest summary is this. On milk drinks, a bigger cup means more milk. On black coffee, a bigger cup means more coffee. If you want a stronger milk drink, an extra shot costs less than a size up and does more.
There is one more wrinkle worth knowing. The shots in a Flat White and a Ristretto Bianco are pulled short, which is what ristretto means: the barista stops the pour early, before the bitter tail comes through. Same beans, less water, so the cup tastes rounder rather than sharper. The Flat White only comes in Short, Tall and Grande for that reason, since a Venti of it would flood two ristretto shots with too much milk to taste of anything.

What Sizing Up Does to the Calories
The calorie step is almost entirely milk, which is why it is small on black coffee and large on anything blended. A Caffè Latte runs 74 calories Short, 124 Tall, 151 Grande and 204 Venti. The Cappuccino sits lower at 64, 103, 130 and 169, because a third of the cup is foam rather than liquid milk.
An Americano barely moves: 4 calories Short, 7 Tall, 11 Grande, 14 Venti. You could size that one up twice and still be under 15 calories. A Caramel Frappuccino is the other end of the scale at 282 calories Tall, 362 Grande and 403 Venti, and there is no Short at all.
A change of milk moves the number as much as a change of size. Oat and soya sit near dairy, almond comes in lowest, and coconut lands in between. The milk options guide has the figures for each.
Syrup is the other lever, and it is the one people forget. Each pump adds around 20 calories, and a Grande carries four pumps by default against three in a Tall. So a flavoured Grande picks up 27 calories from the extra milk and another 20 from the extra pump before you have changed anything else. A Grande cup with the Tall number of pumps is a request baristas take without comment.
| Drink | Short | Tall | Grande | Venti |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Caffè Americano | 4 | 7 | 11 | 14 |
| Cappuccino | 64 | 103 | 130 | 169 |
| Caffè Latte | 74 | 124 | 151 | 204 |

How to Order the Size You Actually Want
Say the size first, then the drink: "Tall Flat White" rather than "Flat White, Tall". Baristas build the order in that sequence, and it saves the second question.
If you do not name a size, you get the default, which is Grande on most drinks. That is the single most common way people spend more than they meant to. A named Tall on a Cappuccino saves you money and 27 calories at the same time.
The Short is worth asking for on anything strong. A Short Cappuccino gives you the same single shot as a Tall in a smaller cup, so the coffee to milk ratio is higher and the drink tastes stronger. It is also the cheapest way into most hot drinks. It does not appear on the board, but it is on the till.
The app is the easiest way to see all the sizes at once, because it lists every option with its calorie count. The app guide covers how collection orders work.
Is Sizing Up Worth It?
On black coffee, yes. A Grande Americano costs a little more than a Tall and gives you a genuine 50% more caffeine, from 89.1mg to 133.7mg, for 4 extra calories. That is the clearest value step on the whole menu.
On milk drinks, mostly no. The jump from Tall to Grande on a Caffè Latte buys 119ml more steamed milk and 27 more calories, and not one milligram of caffeine. If what you want is a stronger coffee, an extra shot is the cheaper move and it works on any size. If what you want is a longer drink to sit with, then the Grande is doing exactly what you are paying for.
On Frappuccinos the maths turns against you fastest. Tall to Venti adds 121 calories, and the drink is mostly ice by the bottom of the cup. A Tall is usually the sensible order there.
